A Colourful Tribute to Aldershot’s Agricultural Roots
If you’ve driven along Plains Road recently, you may have noticed a vibrant new addition outside the DOT Patio.
Rooted in Aldershot – The Aldershot BIA is proud to unveil our newest public art installation, created by local artist Sarah Carlson of Living Murals. While the installation immediately catches your eye with its bold colours, it also tells an important story—one that has deep roots in Aldershot’s history.
Long before Plains Road became the bustling commercial corridor, it is today, Aldershot was known for its orchards, farms, and roadside markets. Local families grew an incredible variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, selling them directly from farm stands that welcomed residents and visitors alike. Fresh peaches, apples, pears, cherries, berries, melons, vegetables, and colourful flowers were all part of the landscape that helped shape our community.
This art installation honours that legacy.
The design weaves together many of the crops historically grown in the area, flowing across the fence in a vibrant chromatic rainbow. Apples, pears, peaches, cherries, grapes, raspberries, blueberries, melons, heirloom carrots, beans, lettuce, gladiolus, geraniums, and sunflowers all come together to represent the abundance that once flourished here.
More than just a beautiful display, the installation is a reminder of the people who worked on the land, the families who built businesses around local agriculture, and the strong sense of community created through neighbourhood markets. It celebrates a chapter of Aldershot’s history that continues to influence the character of our village today.
Projects like this are an important part of the Aldershot BIA’s commitment to placemaking and beautification. Public art has the power to tell stories, spark conversations, create memorable spaces, and strengthen community pride. By celebrating our past, we also create experiences that encourage people to explore, connect, and support local businesses.
