Today We Celebrate Marion Duffield from Pilates on Plains

This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating women whose stories are rooted in resilience, connection, and the courage to begin again. Today, we’re proud to highlight Marion Duffield, owner of Pilates on Plains, whose studio and spa have quickly become a place of warmth, movement, and belonging in the Aldershot community.

Finding Home — and Healing — in Aldershot

Marion’s journey to Aldershot began during a profound life transition. Two years ago, after her husband went through brain cancer, she and her family made the decision to leave their downtown home in search of a quieter, more grounded lifestyle. Aldershot felt like the right next chapter.

Drawn to the nearby Royal Botanical Gardens trails and a townhouse backing onto a peaceful forest, Marion found comfort in nature — especially watching her dog, Tank, happily explore his surroundings. From the beginning, the community felt warm, welcoming, and full of spirit. Opening her business here wasn’t just a practical choice; it was an emotional one.

Those same feelings of home, calm, and connection are exactly what Marion strives to create inside Pilates on Plains — a space designed to feel safe, supportive, and deeply human.

Giving Back Through Connection and Care

This year’s International Women’s Day theme centers on support and connection; something Marion lives out daily through her business. Though Pilates on Plains only opened on October 1, 2025, giving back has already become a meaningful part of their mission.

From hosting a Christmas food drive to organizing a Family + Kids event during March Break with two other local women, Marion is intentional about creating opportunities that bring people together. Her doors are truly open to everyone — from the “littles” who gather excitedly for Charm Bar bracelet parties, carefully choosing beads and charms, to clients at every stage of life.

One particularly inspiring client recently turned 88 and graduated from balance and stability work to the reformer — a reminder that strength, growth, and joy have no age limit. These moments, spanning generations, are what makes the studio feel alive.

Marion’s hope is simple yet powerful: to continue creating shared experiences that strengthen the heartbeat of Aldershot.

Navigating Challenges with Heart

Like many new business owners, Marion’s biggest challenge has been visibility. Tucked into the West Plains corridor, Pilates on Plains isn’t a place you stumble upon through large-scale advertising. Instead, growth happens neighbour by neighbour — through walk-ins, word-of-mouth, and genuine connection.

What keeps Marion going are the people who find their way through the door: the clients who message her after class to say how good they feel, those who comment on the warmth of the space, and the neighbours who stop by just to chat. These small but meaningful moments of encouragement affirm her purpose and fuel her passion.

The Power of the Aldershot Business Community

Being part of the Aldershot Business Community has added another layer of connection to Marion’s journey. She’s made it a priority to visit other local businesses, meet fellow owners, and learn about what they’re building.

She describes the women entrepreneurs in the area as bold, smart, hardworking, and generous — a group that inspires her daily. With the support of the BIA through shared opportunities and local events, Marion feels deeply connected to the neighbourhood and excited to contribute in any way she can.

Advice for Women Dreaming of Starting a Business

Marion’s advice to women considering starting a business in Aldershot is refreshingly direct: just do it.

At 62, while many around her are talking about retirement, Marion sees opportunity. “I’m only 62,” she says — and she means it. The studio and spa give her purpose, energy, and joy. Teaching Pilates, helping people feel strong and confident in their bodies, and staying active herself has made opening a business later in life one of the best decisions she’s ever made.

For Marion, Aldershot isn’t just the perfect place to run a business — it’s the perfect place to begin again.
