People on Plains Blog Series – Meet Peggi and her team from Wellbeings Pain Management & Dependency Clinic!
We asked a few questions to learn some history and to get to know her business better.
Why did you choose Aldershot for your business?
I’ve called Aldershot “home” since 1997 when I moved to the village of Aldershot. I grew up in Burlington when it was a town and my grandparents made their homestead here when it was Nelson Village. I’ve lived in many countries around the world but “here” is home with my family, friends and my community.
What sets you apart from all the rest?
Wellbeings® opened in Aldershot in 2010 amid a flurry of controversy, as most people didn’t even know what opioids were. The limited information lead some people to believe that opioids were only related to addictions and that they had no benefits in the medical world. That’s not the case. They offer people relief from pain! Opioids play a key role in helping people who live with pain manage and function as best they can. The misinformation delayed the opening of Wellbeings®. However, we were not deterred and we’re now midway into our second decade of caring for people in Aldershot. It is heartwarming to know that we have helped so many people in our community and beyond. I believed in 2009 that it was my moral duty, obligation and responsibility to educate people and make medical care available in our community where none formally existed. That certainly sets us apart! I’m an educator and my mission was clear. There was a grave need for a medical office in our community to help those with pain, addictions and mental health un-wellness. In 2006 there was a government report that highlighted that Burlington/Halton was one of only 4 under-serviced areas in all of Ontario. The Wellbeings® Model of Care is a multi-disciplinary, best-practice, and evidence-based model of care which we use to improve care through our research and patient’s input. We want to empower people to live their best life!
What is your specialty product or service?
We are a specialized medical office and most services are covered by OHIP. Wellbeings® offers medical care for people suffering from pain, dependence or addiction to substances and mental health un-wellness. People can refer themselves if they’re concerned that they are using substances that are interfering with their daily lives. For pain referrals, patients must have their Family Physician or Specialist make the referral. We recognize that “waiting” to be seen by a physician can be a difficult time and so we attempt to minimize wait-times for pain treatments. If someone is concerned about their substance use, they’ll usually be seen within 48 hours during business hours and sometimes even the same day. Wellbeings® is an appointment only clinic. Call 905-631-9355 to book an appointment.
What do you love about Aldershot and what is YOUR favourite business to visit in our BIA?
We love that Aldershot is a community within a bigger community. Aldershot as a village has unique qualities and it is part of the bigger city of Burlington. Aldershot is the home for so many of our patients, staff, and physicians. The White Oaks Plaza is home for us. There are many great businesses here like Aldershot Guardian Pharmacy, J&G Meats, The Platter Company, The Olive Oil Dispensary, and Meena Cleaners just to name a few of the specialty shops that we regularly patronize. Plenty of free parking makes it easy to access so many businesses.
What would you like the Aldershot community to know about you and your business.
We’re here to help people who would like to find other options rather than living in pain or struggling with substance use disorder (SUD). For people who have a dependency on opioids and/or alcohol, we want them to know that there are options to changing behaviours and reducing their intake. We want to enable people to live the life they want to live and find joy everyday.
We welcome people to seek medical help and counselling at Wellbeings®. We are a non-judgemental and welcoming medical clinic, treating all people with respect and dignity and we expect that our patients treat our clinical staff the same way.
COVID-19 has been a particularly challenging time for everyone. If you find that your pain has increased during Covid or that you’re drinking more than you’d like and need support to reduce your behaviours, please know we’re here to help.
Please note that we have been at the forefront of research in pain, addictions and mental health un-wellness and we have new treatments that are showing amazing results. We have been partnered, as a leader in research in addictions with institutional world leaders. The most recent research that’s been published offers success rates of 86%, six months after the last treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). That means there’s been no relapse/drinking six months after the last treatment. This is ground-breaking and encouraging work!
Wellbeings® is here to help you or someone you love get your life back and be the best person you can be. If you or someone you love might benefit from care, please give Shelley or Julia a call at 905-631-9355. Most of our services are fully-covered by OHIP.
